I can’t tell you the exact size of the manta ray that swooped out of the blackness and veered toward me, but it was bigger than I am. Its gaping mouth, broad enough to swallow my entire head, came so near I could see inside—the beast looked to be all mouth. When close enough to kiss, the manta glided silently into a backward roll, its white underbelly, like a bed sheet in the wind, passing within inches of my face. I could count its open gill slits as the ray slipped past. Screams could be heard through the water
