Wildlife cruises: Swimming with sea lions and spotting whales in Mexico
By Rosemary Behan, The Times UK
Snorkelling with sea lions didn’t sound like a real activity, so I hadn’t paid much attention to the rumours on our cruise. Sea lions are so huge, so loud and so unwieldy that surely no liability-obsessed American cruise company would offer such an excursion.
However, after yoga and breakfast one day, I changed into my wetsuit, donned my mask and fins and jumped into the water from a ski to do it myself. I had seen sea lions sunning themselves on rocks on countless previous wildlife tours, but while the California sea lion is little more than a grumpy, hulking mass of flab above water, swimming here in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez they couldn’t be more graceful.
