It all started with some friendly trash talk.
The island was named after a Viceroy named Horcasita, a Mexican Count who sent the first western exploration into the region. The name was shortened to Orcas and given to the whole island chain. Eventually the islands became collectively known as the San Juan Islands; however Orcas Island retained its name.
Justin called over the radio that there were whales off of the bow. I quickly made my way in that direction in time to see a humpback whale breach just off the port side. It was an incredible moment that only Justin and I experienced.
