A Day in the Life...of a Wellness Instructor

By Chella, Wellness Instructor, Wilderness Discoverer

Mornings are a favorite time for me here onboard the Wilderness Discoverer. Each day begins with a brisk hop up the stairs from my bunk below, to peak around the corner and see if the sky is offering liquid sunshine (aka rain), or the real deal. Both the rainy days as well as the sunny ones have their own special ambiance they add to the scenery, and this day looks like a bright one.

A sunny morning

And we have sunshine! (you're looking at a reflection)

Being the Wellness Instructor on the Wilderness Discoverer, I begin each morning leading a yoga class on the upper deck. There is something really special about getting to practice yoga outside in Alaska. The air is so pure and energizing, and each morning finds us in a new beautiful spot to tune into. This morning, we anchored at the appropriately named Scenic Cove. My yoga class enjoyed warming up with some gentle stretching, and thanking the sun with a few rounds of sun salutations. Just after 8 o’clock, it was time to get off the mat and head down to fuel up with a hot breakfast and begin the days adventures.

This being my first year with InnerSea Discoveries, I have had the opportunity to see lots of new trails and landscapes, and I have to say that today’s hike on Baird Glacier has by far been my most memorable experience. It’s hard to even find the right words to describe the terrain, but the one I hear the most often is “otherworldly.” Always an adventure to Baird, the skiff drivers navigate strong currents and varying tides, while the wilderness guides find their way through an ever-changing glacial moraine. The guests got their first chance to really appreciate their wonderful muck boots, and a number of the kids onboard (both in age and spirit) got to show us all how to truly embrace the mud with a smile. No day being complete without a slight bit of silliness, today one guest literally got attached to his boot, requiring four crew members to assist in freeing him from it’s hold.

The rest of the day was packed with lots of guests exploring the cove on the kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, and two of them finding their way to my massage room. A sweet treat after a day of activities is escaping to my quiet, warm sanctuary with soft music and gentle smells to melt away any last bits of stress. Winding down the day, catching the last glimmers of sunlight, I head back down the stairs to my bunk to rest. Drifting off to sleep, I find myself excited to see what kind of morning tomorrow will reveal when I reach the top of the stairs and peek around the corner to greet the day.
