Music With a View

11-20-2014

It was the first week of July when I had my first look at the infamous Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park. Her beauty and her size absolutely exceeded my expectations. I had always heard that “large Marge” was an unforgettable sight, and I certainly couldn’t stop staring at her as we delicately and patiently sailed by on our Alaska adventure cruise aboard the Wilderness Adventurer.

Guests were gathered on the outer decks with their coats and their cameras. They gazed in amazement and photographed as many portions of the glacier as they could hoping to maybe take some of her magic home with them.

In a last minute attempt to enhance the experience, our second mate Gavin and I grabbed our instruments and headed to the very top deck above the bridge of the vessel to surprise the guests with an outdoor mini-concert.

I played the ukulele. He played the guitar.

We fumbled a few times and had fun with it, but the guests were surprised and seemed delighted by the music we shared. There was even a calving that occurred right in the middle of our song which you can hear at the beginning of the video below.

This was an unforgettable moment of my summer, and hopefully for others as well. I know I will never play music in a more spectacular venue than within a mile from the face of a massive glacier in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska.
