Saturday: Anchorage (B)

It’s a quick flight to Anchorage. You’re welcomed at the airport by an UnCruise representative and transferred to your hotel for check in. Take in Anchorage sights as you please today. Overnight at Lakefront Hotel (or similar).

Sunday: Anchorage/Girdwood (BLD)

After a belly-warming breakfast, your local guide whisks you away for a narrated tour of Anchorage. Visit the Anchorage Museum featuring a large collection of Alaska Native artwork and crafts. After included lunch at the museum’s restaurant, take in a change of scenery. The drive along the Turnagain Arm stretch of the Seward Highway is one of America’s most picturesque roadways. The sea and mountain views are endless. Check in to your hotel and unwind from your travels. Tonight, meet with your guide and fellow explorers for a welcome dinner at a local brewery. A wild Alaska salmon bake, local brews, and an overview of the adventures to come are on the menu. Overnight at Hotel Alyeska (or similar).

Monday: Girdwood (BLD)

After breakfast, gear up for the day’s energizing activities, and schedule your rejuvenating post-adventure spa treatment*. Then hit the trail for a moderate, 4.5-mile round trip, guided hike on the Lower Winner Creek Trail. You may find snow along the way—take a break mid-hike and make a snowman. This afternoon, see another side of the peninsula with a hike along Turnagain Arm. With southern exposure, if conditions are right you’ll get a warming dose of sunshine. Springtime means moose, bear, and Dall sheep are out and about with their new babies and waterfalls rush with icy runoff. During your picnic lunch, take in the view—soaring snow-capped peaks and long stretches of coastline. After accruing many trail miles, take advantage of your hotel’s amenities with that spa treatment or soak hard-working legs in the hot tub. Overnight at Hotel Alyeska (or similar).
*Guests on Apr 22, 29; May 6, 13, 20 departures receive a complimentary $140 credit at the Hotel Alyeska spa. Services must be scheduled by guest for use during their stay; gratuities are on own, at guest’s discretion. Guests traveling on departures after May 20 may purchase $140 spa certificates at a discounted price.

Tuesday: Girdwood/Chugach National Forest/Seward

Pack your binoculars—you’re headed into Chugach National Forest for a hike along a trail known for great bird and wildlife spotting. Watch for moose, fox, Dall sheep, coyotes, eagles, and waterfowl. The moderate Williwaw Trail meanders along a creek of the same name and through a stunning alpine landscape of lakes, u-shaped valleys, and waterfalls. This afternoon swap hiking poles for a PFD. Float along a scenic Class I stretch of the Portage River. The wide, glacial-blue river flows along hanging valleys, through gentle riffles, and perhaps past an iceberg or two. Keep an eye on the shoreline for musk oxen, bison, porcupine, bear, and caribou. At the end of your explorations, transfer to Seward. Overnight at Harbor 360 Hotel (or similar).

Wednesday: Seward/Anchorage (BLD)

First breakfast, then a guided visit to the Alaska SeaLife Center. This marine research center is also a public aquarium. See Steller sea lions, walrus, puffins, king eiders, harbor seals, and octopus up close and learn about the center’s life-saving marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation facility. Then, watch for marine life in the wild along a coastal trail near Resurrection Bay and Caines Head State Recreation Area. There are many trails to choose from. Depending on the tides and conditions, stay low and explore the intertidal zone. Or hike into a forest of mossy trees or to a viewpoint at the top of the headland. Later, transfer to Anchorage for a celebratory dinner of local cuisine and craft Alaskan beer. Overnight at the Lakefront Hotel (or similar).
