Kenai Alpine Adventure
This 4-night pre-cruise icefield and mountain ESCORTED adventure acquaints you with a different side of Alaska and includes all modes of activity—hiking, river rafts, mountain bikes, trains, and dog sleds. Charming seaside and mountain villages, towering mountains, rugged terrain carved by glacial creeks, and Alaska’s state sport.
Sunday: Anchorage/Girdwood (D)
Met at the airport by an UnCruise representative, you’re on your way along one of America’s most beautiful drives. Sea to mountain views stretch as far as the eye can see along the Turnagain Arm section of the Seward Highway. Check in to your hotel and unwind from a big day of travel. At tonight’s welcome dinner, it’s wild Alaska salmon and local brews. Your guide will map out the adventures to come over the next four days. Overnight at Hotel Alyeska (or similar).
Monday: Girdwood (BLD)
Fuel up at breakfast. Today is one for the books! Get a hands-on introduction to Alaska’s state sport—dog mushing. At the Girdwood Mushing Company kennels, meet Iditarod mushers and their sled dogs. Get to know the four-legged team members, including future Iditarod champion puppies. Then feel the power of these athletes on a dogsled ride along mountain trails. Over a picnic lunch, take in the view. It’s majestic. This afternoon, choose your mode of adventure—guided mountain biking, hiking on one of the area’s many trails, or cross-country skiing (as conditions permit). Overnight at Hotel Alyeska (or similar).
Tuesday: Girdwood / Seward (BLD)
After an early breakfast, hit the trail for a moderate, 4.5-mile, guided hike on the Lower Winner Creek Trail—along the way, cross Glacier Creek by hand tram and feel the creek’s spray rushing through a narrow gorge. Later, hop aboard the Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery Train. Let your eyes and camera do the work in the Chugach Mountains while your legs get a rest on your way to Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. A guided float 7 miles down the Placer River begins in iceberg-laden Spencer Lake and cuts through mountain and glacial landscapes. Or, opt for heli-hiking or whitewater rafting for an additional fee. This afternoon, transfer to Seward. Overnight at Harbor 360 Hotel (or similar).
Wednesday: Seward / Kenai Fjords National Park (BLD)
Glaciers, towering mountains, and a step back into the ice age. Put boots on the ground in Kenai Fjords National Park on a hike along the Exit Glacier/Harding Ice Field Trail. Paralleling Exit Glacier, the trail meanders through forest and along a river bar, complete with views of the glacier spilling down from the icefield. Signed points mark where the retreating glacier extended to in the past. Feeling ambitious? Continue on to the Harding Ice Field on a steep, 8.2 mile roundtrip power hike. Later, transfer to Anchorage for a celebratory dinner of local artisan pizza and craft Alaskan beer. Overnight at the Lakefront Hotel (or similar).
Thursday: Depart Anchorage (B)
After breakfast, head to the airport for your flight* to Petersburg. Met at the Petersburg airport, transfer to the Tides Inn (or similar) for your included cruise itinerary hotel stay.
