Alaska Rail, Denali, & Knik River Wilderness
Complete your Alaskan adventure cruise with our 6-night, pre-cruise land tour into Denali National Park, the wilderness surrounding the Knik River, Fairbanks, and Anchorage.
Sunday: Arrive Fairbanks
You’ll be met at the Fairbanks airport and transferred to the River’s Edge Cottages (or similar). At the evening’s wine reception, get acquainted with your travel mates and tour escort who outlines your upcoming days in the heartland.
Monday: Denali National Park (B,L,D)
At the Fairbanks train station, there’s no waiting—you’re whisked through a private entrance away from the crowds to your exclusive rail car. It’s first-class travel with best-of-the-best seating in the upper-level of your domed rail car, where guided commentary provides insight as awe-inspiring views roll by. Arriving in Denali, stretch your legs and grab lunch before heading into the park on a stunning half-day bus ride—your lively driver regales with stories of flora, fauna, and history. In addition to rest stops, you’ll stop for wildlife along the way. Share the journey’s highlights during family-style dinner and enjoy your night at Kantishna Roadhouse (or similar).
Tuesday: Denali National Park (B,L,D)
Wake in the heart of Alaskan wilderness. Adventure is the plan du jour! Hike or fly fish. Mountain bike to Wonder Lake. Or try your luck panning for gold. Your Kantishna hosts suggest activities to take best advantage of the day’s conditions. For an additional fee, take a flightseeing trip or relax with a massage. After a day filled with activity and fresh mountain air, settle in for a tranquil night at Kantishna Roadhouse (or similar).
Wednesday: Talkeetna / Knik River (B,L,D)
An early bus brings you back to the Denali rail depot. On the train, astounding scenery unfolds outside your first-class deluxe dome rail car—this time, to Talkeetna. At the convergence of three rivers, explore this historic gold mining town on your own before a group dinner. The bus ride along the Susitna River and Alaska Range passes quickly. Greeted at the Knik River Lodge, you’re escorted to your cabin—outfitted with plush amenities and your own deck for viewing wildlife, mountains, and (if the skies align) northern lights. It’s a serene evening!
Thursday: Knik River (B,D)
Start with a hot meal in the lodge or continental breakfast delivered to your cabin. Then, step outside for a day of exploration! Hike a Chugach Mountain trail from the lodge and ride to Hatcher Pass to visit historic Independence Mine. Glacier flightseeing and dog sledding are available for additional fees. This evening, be treated to a dog musher presentation and special farewell dinner.
Friday: Anchorage (B,L)
A mid-morning bus ride brings you to Anchorage and a visit to the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Discover Native traditions and legends through a presentation of dance, elder talk and Native Olympics. The afternoon is yours—leisurely stroll through town, visit a museum, and pick from the many options for dinner on your own. Overnight at the Lakefront Anchorage Hotel (or similar).
Saturday: Depart Anchorage / Juneau (B)
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight to join your UnCruise adventure.
